Thiago Alcantara is reportedly on his way to Merseyside to complete his Liverpool transfer after saying emotional goodbyes to his Bayern Munich team-mates.

Jurgen Klopp's side have finally got their man after a summer-long transfer saga - with Bayern boss Hansi Flick congratulating the Reds on the £27million deal.

Thiago is expected to pen a four-year deal, and will provide strength in depth in the middle of the park as Liverpool look to defend their Premier League title.

The 29-year-old helped Bayern win the Champions League in his final game for the club, but told the Bundesliga club's bosses he wanted to seek a new challenge.

The former Barcelona man was also on Manchester United's radar, but appears to have had his heart set on teaming up with Liverpool.

"Thiago is an extraordinary player and was very important for us," said the Bayern boss at a press conference ahead of Friday's Bundesliga opener against Schalke.

"My coaching team and I enjoyed working with him. It was very emotional as we said goodbye. I can only congratulate Liverpool as they got a great player and especially a great person.

"Thiago gave the team a lot of options and made us unpredictable, he solved things in ways you don't expect. Now we're losing yet another great player."

The midfielder is expected to undergo his medical over the next day or so, and will take the No.6 shirt vacated by Dejan Lovren this summer.

He could make his debut in next Thursday's Carabao Cup third round tie away to Lincoln City.
