Thiago Alcantara proved his manager wrong while helping Liverpool to a 2-0 win over Chelsea.

The 29-year-old joined the club in a deal worth in the region of £30m from Bayern Munich earlier this week, but Jurgen Klopp had urged supporters not to expect too much too soon.

Despite only playing the second-half, Thiago completed more passes than any Chelsea player with 75, controlling the pace of the game in midfield.

Since the stats have been recorded since the 2003/04 season, no player has made more successful passes in 45 minutes, in a glimpse of his true quality.

That goes against the comments of Klopp, who said before the game: "I didn't think a second about starting him today. It's really funny that people could consider that.

"Bayern and Liverpool, [the way] we play - there might be similar parts.

"But for sure he played a different position. Whatever he plays for us it's different. So there's no chance!"

Having said earlier in the week: “His numbers were absolutely special last year in Germany as well, most steals, ball recoveries and all these kinds of things - most passes.

“But we don’t play like Bayern, so that still will need some time to get settled and nobody should expect – and I don’t expect – the special things immediately, first game, let’s see.

“It’s a long-term project and we have a good team, so we can give time. But, of course, we want to use him on the pitch, that’s clear. So the work can start now.”

Goalscorer Sadio Mane said of his new colleague after the victory: “Not only me, all the world know what Thiago is capable of. We are lucky to have him in our team. He is a great player."

After Thiago had pledged his allegiance to Liverpool by saying: “I must adapt to the team as fast as I can in the situation and the context that we are living right now.

“Everything is more compact, and we started a little bit later, but still it is football and I think we have to mix all the big things up, all the good things we have. I will help the team in a defensive and offensive [way] and also in a mental aspect.

“[The fans] are not more excited than I am, for sure not! It is not about saying words, it is about doing the things. I will give my heart on the field to my teammates, the club and also to the fans.”
