Thiago Alcantara could land his dream shirt number as Liverpool close in on a £27million move for the Bayern Munich midfielder.
The Reds are in advanced negotiations with the Bundesliga club over a deal for Thiago, with both sides confident a deal can be reached swiftly.
It remains to be seen whether the Spain midfielder will arrive at Anfield in time for Sunday's blockbuster clash against Premier League rivals Chelsea.
But it is hoped that Thiago will be confirmed as a Liverpool player by the end of this week, with Bayern expected to receive £20m up front and a further £5m in bonuses.
The 29-year-old currently wears six for the Bundesliga club, which was Dejan Lovren's shirt number at Liverpool before he left the club to join Zenit St Petersburg this summer.
The number six has previously been worn at Anfield by the likes of John Arne Riise, Luis Alberto and Fabio Aurelio.
And Thiago will be handed the vacant number once he completes his move.
Former Barcelona star Thiago will add strength in depth to midfield as Jurgen Klopp's side look to defend their Premier League title this season and repeat their Champions League success of 2019.
But it is understood their move for Thiago is not based on any player departing, despite interest from Barcelona in Gini Wijnaldum.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with Thiago since it became clear he would not sign a new contract at the Allianz Arena. The midfielder is keen for a new challenge and wants to work with Jurgen Klopp.
German publication Bild reported on Thursday that Bayern have accepted a bid from Liverpool.
If that is the case, all that remains to be agreed is personal terms - but that is not expected to be a problem given Thiago's desire to team up with Klopp.
Thiago will then undergo a medical before penning an expected four-year deal.
Manchester United have also had an interest in Thiago this summer but did not make a move.
It remains to be seen whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side will now contact Bayern, but they would be facing a battle to convince the club and player now Liverpool have finally made their move.
Thiago will become Liverpool's second signing of the summer, after left-back Kostas Tsimikas joined from Olympiakos as backup to Andy Robertson.
