Thiago Silva turned down several offers to join Chelsea this summer because they are “one of the world’s top 10 clubs”, according to the Brazilian’s agent.
Silva, 35, sealed a free move to Stamford Bridge last week after leaving Paris St-Germain upon the expiry of his contract.
The veteran defender, who helped PSG reach the Champions League final before his departure last month, has put pen to paper on a one-year deal in west London, with the option of a further 12 months included.
Yet ahead of his 36th birthday in three weeks’ time, some are doubting whether he has what it takes to cope with the physical demands of the Premier League.
Silva made no more than 25 league appearances in each of his last three seasons at PSG, which will come as a slight concern for Frank Lampard.
However, the player’s agent insists his client is capable of operating at the “highest level” for another five to six years, while revealing he turned down “a lot of offers” to join Chelsea.
“He is on holiday in Italy, he will be in London between now and the end of the week,’ Paulo Tonietto told L’Equipe.
“He is happy to discover the Premier League. We had a lot of offers, but Chelsea are one of the world’s top 10 clubs.
“Physically, Thiago can play for another 5 or 6 years at the highest level. He is an athlete who looks after himself.
“He doesn’t drink, he doesn’t smoke, he doesn’t party. His life is home – work, work – home.”
After finalising his move to Chelsea last week, Silva spoke of his excitement for the season ahead.
“I am so happy to be joining Chelsea,” he said.
