Edwin van der Sar's reaction to a Rio Ferdinand tweet about Donny van de Beek implies the midfielder has never been closer to joining Manchester United.

Van de Beek is believed to have agreed personal terms and passed a medical ahead of a £40million move from Ajax.

The 23-year-old will become Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first signing of the summer and he could line up alongside Bruno Fernandes in the Red Devils midfield.

Van de Beek has been linked with a potential move to Old Trafford for months with Ajax CEO and former United keeper Van der Sar hinting that he could be sold.

Indeed, it is thought that Van der Sar played a big part in the Dutch international joining his former club, rather than going elsewhere.

Former United defender Ferdinand had his say on the potential move on Monday night, tweeting "Good Evening @Donny_beek6" accompanied by the eyes emoji.

And it did not take long for Van der Sar to reply with the crying emoji, hinting that he and Ajax think they are about to lose one of their star players.

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag also appeared resigned to losing Van de Beek by leaving him out of a friendly against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

And when asked about Van de Beek after the game, Ten Hag said: “There are indeed developments that keep him out of the selection. We will see what happens. We’ll make an announcement as soon as there’s some clarity.

“The fact that Donny did not play does indicate a direction. The request not to let him play did not come specifically from one side. We do that together.

“Agreements have been made about a possible transfer, and if that possibility arises you must also cooperate.”

Van de Beek had his medical while with the Netherlands squad ahead of their Nations League games against Poland and Italy this week.

He will then travel to the UK after those fixtures to finalise his move to United ahead of the start of the new season.

Van de Beek helped Ajax reach the 2018-19 Champions League semi-finals, scoring four goals along the way and 40 in all competitions over the last three seasons.
