Van Dijk's season was all but ended last month after being on the receiving end of a poor challenge from Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside derby.
The Dutchman had surgery two weeks ago and faces a race against time to be fit enough to represent his country at the European Championships next summer.
An ACL injury is one of the hardest injuries for a footballer to recover from and there is a chance Van Dijk may not be the same all-conquering defender he was.
But Wijnaldum has some words of encouragement for Van Dijk and revealed they are in regular contact.
"Virgil will return with God's will," Wijnaldum told VI.
“It is a difficult time for him; this is the worst thing you can experience as a football player. You go through hell.
"But I think he is very strong. We FaceTime every now and then and that is very nice.”

Meanwhile, another of Van Dijk's Dutch team-mates Memphis Depay has opened up on his reaction to seeing the 29-year-old get injured by Pickford.
“I didn’t see the tackle myself. I must say I saw him walk off the pitch afterward. When I saw the play, I did use some words that I’m not going to repeat,” Depay told Fox Sports.
“It’s bizarre that you can injure someone like that. I’ll leave it at that. It hurts the whole team, but he hurts the most.”
