Looking to bag a free hotel upgrade?
Some go to extreme lengths to get a better room – from dressing up in formal wear to lying about getting engaged.
But according to travel buff Chelsea Dickenson, it can be a lot simpler to get an upgrade.
The Cheap Holiday Expert founder says e-mailing ahead is the best way to blag freebies.
Don’t be shy in asking for what you want – just make sure you’re super polite when doing so.
If you don’t know where to start, Chelsea has shared a template she uses when she’s travelling.

I hope you’re well.
After reading some amazing reviews, I’ve just booked a stay at your hotel for me and my boyfriend and we are both so excited! It looks great.
This will be our first getaway since the pandemic began and so would love to be considered for an upgrade to help us celebrate this small step towards normality if you have the availability.
Upgrade or not, we are really looking forward to staying with you.
All the best,

It really is as easy as that!
Chelsea has also outlined some other tips and tricks you can use to increase your chances of getting an upgrade.
- Ask the right person – Try to make contact with a decision maker like a manager or hotel staff that work in the bookings department
- Add some humour – Chelsea revealed: “I once got an upgrade from writing an email very similar to the above for a trip to Brussels on the first day that the UK left the EU. We asked if they could help cheer us up – and it worked!”
- Check the hotel’s availability – You’ve got more chance of snagging an upgrade if there are a lot of rooms available
- Tag the hotel on social media – Before jetting off, share your excitement on your public profiles. It’s a way to make a good impression before you even leave home
