The Chase is known for putting contestants under pressure, but the quick-fire questions proved too much for one player on Wednesday's show.

Player Phillip stepped up to the plate, telling host Bradley Walsh he hoped to earn enough dosh to help fund his upcoming wedding.

However, as Brad starting quizzing him during the cash builder round, Phillip – who previously confessed his love for all things Batman – crumbled under the pressure.

He managed to get just two questions right, earning a very modest £2,000 in the opening round.

Blushing, Phillip managed to laugh off the nervous performance, branding it as "terrible" and "awful".

Unlucky Phillip was quick to brand his own performance as "terrible"

Revealing he had hoped to earn a higher sum, he added: "I wanted £4,000."

However, Phillip admitted that "at least it's not none" as "that would be embarrassing".

Turning to take on The Chaser, Shaun Wallace had a cheeky jibe up his sleeve, as he poked fun at Phillip's interest in superheroes.

He asked: "So you like Batman?"

Shaun dreamt up a witty Batman jibe in honour of Phillip's performance

When Phillip nodded in response, Shaun referred to Batman's legendary sidekick and quipped: "Well I'm Robin. Robbing your money."

However, Phillip was armed with a comeback, as he warned Shaun: "That's you off the wedding invite guest list."

In another cheeky swipe at his performance, Shaun gave Phillip a low offer of just £2, leaving him with a decision on his hands.

While Phillip's teammates urged him to accept the middle offer of £2,000, he reluctantly went for the low offer, desperate to make it through to the final.

Bradley admitted he had a soft spot for player Phillip as he exited the studio

However, it appeared his luck had run out, as Phillip was eliminated after the second round, bidding farewell to Brad and Shaun.

Brad was sorry to see Phillip – and his cheeky banter – walk offset, as he laughed and said: "I liked him."

The Chase airs on weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
