An explosive Coronation Street storyline which was set to air earlier this year will grace screens around Christmas with ITV being forced to build a new set.

At present, ITV have issued a ban on-location filming due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which means all filming for soaps must be conducted on their set.

The ban saw one huge storyline take a backseat, with executive producer Iain MacLeod suggesting the bombshell was the Geoff and Yasmeen storyline.

Yasmeen is currently serving time behind bars after she lunged at abusive husband Geoff with a glass bottle.

It's believed that the bombshell storyline will centre around Geoff and Yasmeen

The story was set to conclude around Easter - the week of Britain's Got Talent's live semi-finals.

However, filming of soaps abruptly came to a halt in March when the country went into lockdown, meaning the scenes never materialised.

Now, Iain has said he had to "simplify" the storylines rather than completely ditch them.

The storyline is set to hit screens around Christmas

Speaking to Daily Star Online and other news outlets, he said: "There was one, really a high-profile week of episodes that would have required a location shoot and we have a suspension on all off-site filming at the moment so that had to go in the bin.

"But the story itself remained, we just had to re-figure out how it was going to play out and indeed, we've retained that big production set piece in the story, we've just moved it later on in the year."

He went on to say: "So rather than going on-location we gave ourselves time to build the required location on site."

Iain fuelled speculation by suggesting the story could involve a courtroom

MacLeod added that it had been a "major casualty" but went on to say that everything had worked out, with social distancing.

"Most of the stories have remained with [this] one exception and even in that case it's remained, it's just been booted down in the year and it's now playing around Christmas time."

Praising the props team at the Salford based soap, he gushed: "What's fantastic is that we have our own craft shop and our own design department."

Teasing the upcoming storyline, he said: "So if there is something where we might have done offsite on another location... we need a courtroom..."

Interrupting himself mid flow, he swiftly said: "I'm not saying we do need a courtroom but we might need a courtroom - if we do then we can just build one."

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV
