The Windass family has been at the heart of the drama on Coronation Street for years now, but their latest storyline could be their most gruelling yet.

Ray Crosby (Mark Frost) has villainised the family, first making an enemy of Gary Windass (Mikey North) in his demolition plans, and later preying on his little sister.

Gary has taken the wrap for his sister Faye, spending time behind bars after learning she was responsible for the assault of Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson).

Faye bludgeoned Adam by accident, mistaking the lawyer for sleazy businessman Ray Crosby, who attempted to rape her in distressing previous scenes.

After a tearful admission on New Year's Eve, Gary knows the full truth, becoming the hero of the hour and saving his little sister.

Ray has cemented his status as a sinister Corrie villain in recent months

Actress Ellie Leach, who has been playing Faye since 2011, has opened up on the storyline, revealing Gary will continue to defend his sister – no matter what.

The soap star, 19, predicts Gary – who has murdered in the past – will do "anything" to save his sister.

Ellie said: "I think she does really trust him with her life. I think he'd do anything for her, I genuinely do.

"Before their family adopted Faye he didn't have that relationship with anyone, so I think now he's got it and it's been quite a few years.

Faye turned to her brother Gary for help in the aftermath of the attack

"Even though she is adopted she is part of his family and part of his life. She is his sister. I think he'd literally go to the ends of the world for her."

Ellie also highlighted the fury Gary feels towards Ray, having learned the sordid truth about the sexual assault.

She explained: "Obvious he's so angry with Ray."

Gary's devotion to his sister comes as Ray's desperation grows, with his schemes for building developments on the street starting to crack.

Gary is currently holed up in prison for a crime he didn't commit

Corrie boss Iain McLeod also highlighted Gary's role in Faye's heartbreaking assault storyline, predicting his heroic streak will come to light.

He said: "I really like the morally complicated Gary that we've got now. He's still capable of doing all the nice heroic stuff that Gary might once have done.

"The story around Faye and his efforts to save his sister I think is a good example of that."

Will Gary try and get revenge in the months ahead?

While Gary will act to defend his sister, McLeod revealed Gary will work with the "forces of good rather than evil" in saving Faye.

Describing the reaction to Faye's assault, he said the storyline will include "Gary, who, having done some things over the past couple of years that are little morally grey, shall we say, becomes the hero of the piece and saves his little sister in a way I think people will really enjoy.

"This time he's actually fighting for the forces of good rather than evil."

Other characters involved in Ray's demise will be Abi Franklin (Sally Carman), who risks life and limb to defeat the Weatherfield conman.

Siblings Debbie (Sue Devaney) and Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) will also get caught up in the action, signalling drama to come.

McLeod promised: "It's all full of twists and turns and literal life ad death jeopardy."

With the Windass family, Abi and Kevin against him, will Ray get his just desserts?

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8pm on ITV.
