But things turned awkward when the 34-year-old host, who is stepping in for Caroline Flack, was forced to "cover up" a blunder Sophie made during the live show.
The audience were told it was the very first time Sophie, 21, and Connor, 25, were being reunited after the coffee bean salesman was booted out of the villa last week.
After he was voted off the show, Sophie, who is the little sister of Rochelle Humes, decided to continue her journey in the ITV2 villa.
Laura gushed that she felt like a "third wheel" as the pair reunited and agreed to go on a date.
However, the illusion of it being their first meeting since Sophie touched back down in the UK was quickly shattered when Sophie let slip that she had a "brief" chat with Connor backstage.
In a bid to build the illusion back up, Laura quickly gushed that it was only a "brief five minute chat".
After Sophie said, "I saw him for five minutes", Laura rushed to correct her.
Laura said: "You saw him very briefly but we didn't let you see too much."
Viewers instantly rushed to Twitter to point out the blunder.
One wrote: "Sophie just blurted out that she already met Connor for 5 mins Laura quickly tried to cover that up hahahahahaha oh my days."
A second tweeted: "Hahaha Sophie f****d it. She wasn’t supposed to say she had already seen and chatted to Connor."
The pair snuggled up together on the sofa as Sophie asked Connor if he was going to take her on a date.
To which he replied: I am. I need to get her number first. It'll be so weird with no cameras, no mics."
Love Island airs at 9pm on ITV2 everyday.
