Phillip Schofield defended a "harsh" comment he made on Wednesday’s This Morning, during an installment of Spin to Win.

The premise of the jazzy game show is for contestants to answer their phone and deliver a password, granting the opportunity to give the glittering wheel a spin.

However, more often than not, contestants fail to answer the phone – leaving Phil and Holly Willoughby exasperated.

On Wednesday, Phil was left rolling his eyes when there were two caller mishaps in a row, doling out some tough love for contestants.

First up, the contestant answered by saying "hello" – which immediately ruled them out from the competition.

Phil urged viewers to stay beside their phones when the episode airs

Phil was sympathetic, saying: "Who was that? Laura, oh Laura. She will be gutted. She’s going to be so angry."

Next up, the second caller failed to make it to their phone, as Holly pleaded: "Where are you?"

After a number of rings, he instructed the ITV crew to hang up the line, saying: "That’s it, moving on."

Turning to Holly, he asked for the name of the contestant who had failed to answer their phone.

Caller Derek eventually delivered the correct answer and got to play

When Holly revealed her name was Audrey, Phil exclaimed: "What's the point of entering if you’re not going to answer the phone?"

Holly made a noise, making it clear she didn’t approve of the snappy jibe, saying: "You’re making him cross."

Phil defended himself, saying: "It's harsh, I know, but true."

Thankfully, on the next ring, contestant Derek successfully offered the password to the presenters, securing his win.

Delighted, Holly shouted: "Are you ready to win some money!"

This Morning airs on weekdays at 10am on ITV.
