This Morning star Phillip Schofield has addressed the rumours that he will be taking part in Strictly Come Dancing this year.

Bosses reportedly want the 58-year-old television presenter to make history by competing in the BBC dancing show's first same-sex couple, just months after he came out as gay.

A show source claimed that Phil was set to appear on the show, telling Daily Star Sunday: "Top-secret talks have been happening for a few weeks and an offer has been made.

"The hope is Phillip would dance with another man. If it happens it would be a beautiful and important moment both for him and for the show."

A spokesperson for Phillip has since denied the claim and told RadioTimes: "He is not in talks with the BBC."

A string of Phillip’s This Morning co-stars have starred on Strictly in the past including Ruth Langsford, Ranj Singh and Alison Hammond.

Phil hosts Dancing On Ice alongside Holly Willoughby which had its own same-sex couple earlier this year when Steps singer Ian “H” Watkins was partnered with professional skater Matt Evers.

Strictly producers have just weeks to finalise the celebrity line-up.

Strictly Come Dancing are reportedly eager to sign Phillip to compete as part of the BBC dancing show's first ever same-sex couple

Rehearsals for the new series are due to kick off at the end of the summer before it hits screens in late October.

Other famous faces who have been offered a spot include singer Jessie J, EastEnders star Tamzin Outhwaite and Made In Chelsea’s Jamie Laing.

Jamie was originally part of the 2019 Strictly cast but was forced to pull out of the show due to an injury.

Emmerdale hunk Kelvin Fletcher took over his place and ended up wining the competition last year with South African beauty Oti Mabuse.

While Phillip may not be taking to the dancefloor this year, Strictly head judge Shirley Ballas has revealed who she'd like to see on the show.

The award-winning dancer said: "I think it would be lovely for one of the younger royals, you know? I mean, the world is changing, let's face it. We've even seen the Queen on Zoom!

"So it would be lovely to have a younger royal on the show and I know that so many of the royal family, because I've met them, are such fans of the show.

"It brings joy in their evenings. So I mean, let's wait and see."

Strictly come Dancing is expected to return to our screens later this year
